Siemens Power Generation announced on September 14th an agreement to sell 600 megawatts of wind turbines to FPL Energy, with delivery beginning in 2006. Siemens will manufacture, install, and commission its 2.3-megawatt Mk II turbines for FPL Energy, marking the first sale of Siemens wind turbines within the United States. See the Siemens press release.
PPM Energy announced on the same day that it has agreed to buy 300 megawatts of wind turbines from GE Energy for use in 2006. In August, PPM Energy completed construction on its 75-megawatt Klondike II Wind Power Plant near Wasco, Oregon, and the company expects to complete four other wind power projects this year: the 100-megawatt Trimont project in Minnesota, the 150-megawatt Elk River project in Kansas, the 150-megawatt Shiloh project in California, and the 198-megawatt Maple Ridge project in New York. For the business press
Siemens receives order from FPL Energy for up to 600 megawatts of wind turbines
Erlangen, Sep 14, 2005
Siemens Power Generation (Siemens) today announced an agreement with FPL Energy, the wholesale generation subsidiary of FPL Group, Inc. (NYSE: FPL) for wind turbines totaling up to 600 megawatts (MW).
Siemens will manufacture, install and commission its 2.3-MW Mk II wind turbines for FPL Energy. Delivery of the wind turbines will begin in 2006 and support the planned expansion of wind-driven electricity generation projects at FPL Energy.
¡°This agreement with FPL Energy is important because it is the first wind power contract for our growing wind power business in the Americas region since Siemens acquired Bonus Energy last December,¡± said Randy Zwirn, member, Siemens Power Generation Executive Management and president and CEO, Siemens Power Generation, Inc.
¡°The wind power business, especially in the U.S. and Canada, is more favorable now than it was in the past,¡± added Zwirn. ¡°With the increased focus on clean renewable energy, as well as high natural gas prices and volatility, wind power is an increasingly attractive alternative. In addition, the recently passed Federal Energy Policy Act includes provisions for subsidies and tax credits for the development of renewable energy, which enhances the attractiveness for our customers.¡±
\"Wind projects continue to be an important part of the growth strategy for FPL Energy,¡± said Jim Robo, president of FPL Energy. \"The recent passage of the Energy Policy Act that contains a two-year extension of the wind production tax credit enables us to execute, without interruption, our wind development program. As the leading U.S. wind power company, it is important for FPL Energy to secure a reliable and economic source of wind turbines for use in projects we are developing today and into the future. This new turbine agreement with Siemens provides us with a platform to deploy turbines early next year,¡± said Robo.
The Power Generation Group (PG), a unit of Siemens AG, is one of the premier entities in the international power generation sector. In fiscal 2004 (which ended September 30), Siemens PG posted sales amounting to approximately EURO 7.5 billion and received new orders totaling EURO 9.2 billion. PPM secures 300 MW of new wind turbines
September 14, 2005
PORTLAND, Ore. — PPM Energy, ScottishPower\'s (NYSE: SPI) competitive US energy business, today announced that it has agreed to purchase 300 megawatts (MW) of wind turbines from GE Energy for use in projects in late stage development expected to be built during calendar 2006.
\"This turbine order for 2006 delivery, coupled with options and other pending turbine arrangements, will enable PPM Energy to continue to grow its profitable wind business at a similar rate as in the past,\" said Terry Hudgens, PPM Energy CEO.
In August, PPM Energy completed construction ahead of schedule on its 75-megawatt Klondike II Wind Power Plant near Wasco, Ore. Portland General Electric (PGE) has a 30-year agreement with PPM Energy to purchase all of Klondike II\'s wind capacity to serve PGE customers beginning in December 2005.
PPM Energy also expects this year to complete four other wind power projects ¨¢ the 100 MW Trimont project in Minnesota, the 150 MW Elk River project in Kansas, the 150 MW Shiloh project in California and the 198 MW Maple Ridge project in New York that PPM is building as a joint venture with Horizon Wind Energy, a unit of Goldman Sachs.
About PPM Energy
PPM Energy controls about 830 MW of wind energy currently operating in seven states and has announced a total of 574 MW of additional wind projects to be built in 2005. It now has around 1,400 MW of wind energy under its control, well on target toward its goal of at least 2,300 MW online by 2010. PPM Energy balances its supply portfolio with sales to wholesale customers, placing almost all of its output in long-term contracts.
Major customers include the cities of Seattle, Sacramento, Pasadena, Anaheim as well as investor-owned utilities such as Alliant Energy and Xcel Energy and the federal Bonneville Power Administration. PPM Energy also has about 800 MW of clean gas resources under its control to give customers a wide range of options for adding environmentally responsible energy to their portfolios. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Center for Resource Solutions honored PPM Energy recently for significantly advancing development of the green power market.
